Abstract
Fiscal Impact of Performing Up-front Science in Resource Plays
Abstract
An examination of public production data on various resource plays (hydrocarbon-bearing shales and combinations of high TOC shale and conventional volumetric depletion reserves) was conducted. A unique property of these plays is that while there is substantial variation in production response from well to well, groups of wells that are compared to each other within the play often demonstrate clear similarities in terms of production profiles. This observation led to the conclusion that unlike more conventional plays, data from resource plays may be gleaned that point to process as being a factor in production profiles, rather than the more common case of natural parameter variation dominating production response (“reservoir, reservoir, reservoir”).
Several case histories of the application of science to wildcatting (and eventually to field development efforts) are presented, and the fiscal value of the results of these actions are estimated utilizing public data. A quick review of those technologies that were deemed to have the highest influence on process is offered.
