Abstract
Uncovering Hidden Value - The Horizontal Montoya Play
Abstract
Prior to horizontal technology, the Montoya formation was considered a secondary target that may or may not be completed prior to abandoning wells drilled to the prolific Devonian and Ellenberger reservoirs in the Block 16 field area. In 1998 with a drill depth of 13,000’, gas prices hovering around $2.00/MCF and calculated log porosities averaging 2-4% the Montoya appeared uneconomical. Detailed reservoir characterizations and the advent of horizontal drilling and completion technology proved to be a game changer and an estimated 350 to 400 BCFE was developed with close to 200 BCFE produced to date from 45 horizontal wells.
The key to unlocking the potential of the reservoir was working with a highly skilled integrated technical team and determining the occurrence of porosity in the chert that was below the detection limit of the well logs.
And using this information, along with available stress information, properly constructing the well bore design using the derived rock properties starting with the completion.
