Abstract: Taming the Wolf in the Wolffork: Balancing G&G with Process

Doug Walser1

Abstract

It has become apparent that the Wolfcamp portion of the Wolffork play at the southern extreme of the Midland Basin is a combination unconventional resource and conventional Darcy parameter volumetric decline play. As such, management of exploration must take into account the roles and impact of geological/geophysical/petrophysical activities, possibly to the same or greater degree as the role of completion process.

This study looks at tying log response and far-field mapping to lateral elevation placement of Wolfcamp horizontals and preventing wild upward fracture height growth during completion activities. Up-front science required to optimize parallel lateral spacing, stages per 1,000 ft of wellbore, and cluster count (or port exit count) per stage will be examined. It will be shown that separating out the relative signatures of k·h, f·h, TOC· h, and feature count/100 acres can assist in determining the relative importance and roles of natural existing parameters, as opposed to simply focusing on the D&C processes employed.
