Abstract
The Road From Conventional to Unconventional Play: Resource Plays; The New Paradigm
Abstract
“We usually find oil in new places with old ideas. Sometimes, we find oil in an old place with a new idea, but we seldom find much oil in an old place with an old idea. “Several times in the past we have thought we were running out of oil, whereas actually we were only running out of ideas.” Parke Dickey
This quote may best tell the story of the dynamic shift in the oil industry in the latter part of the 20th Century. This talk will take us through the plays and some of the concepts that have gotten us to the point where the big headlines in the oil industry are the newest resource plays. It was through ideas and technology that Mitchell led the way with the Barnett Shale and got us to a point where we are finding oil in old places with new fracking technology and horizontal drilling. This talk will follow the development of the older shale gas plays that started off the unconventional plays through several of the newer Resource plays that are shaping basins such as the Permian Basin.
