Petroleum Geochemistry of Crude Oils from the Permian Basin and Application to Unconventional Resource Development

John Zumberge

Abstract

Decades of unparalleled conventional exploration and development of the Permian Basin have been enormously successful in spite of the lack of in-depth understanding of source conditions in the basin. The emergence of unconventional exploration has changed this dynamic and it is now critical that companies know which units are active source rocks and which of these have unconventional potential. This presentation draws on a large database of source rock and oil geochemistry to identify and evaluate the multiple source rocks active in the Permian Basin. Oils were geochemically assessed and grouped into families that share common sources using genetic-specific bio-markers (a.k.a. chemical fossils) and stable carbon isotope compositions. Families were then tied back to source rock units which are mapped across the basin.
