Sheikhs vs. Shale: What’s Next for OPEC?

James L. Smith

Abstract

The choices facing OPEC have changed due to revitalization of the U.S. oil industry. Will OPEC still act as a swing producer, or has shale become the new swing producer? Has OPEC lost the ability to set the market price of oil? If so, who or what will take its place? If not, what price level is OPEC likely to favor going forward from 2015? Regardless of who is in charge, are the days of $100 oil forever behind us? Basic economic principles and historical perspective provide insight into these and other aspects of the world oil market.
