Abstract: Preliminary Outcrop Characterization of a Cretaceous Carbonate Tidal Channel Point Bar

George Vaughan1

Abstract

This study characterizes the depositional environments of an Edwards Group limestone outcrop containing a well preserved tidal point bar. The point bar extends over 250 meters along a roadcut at the intersection of Interstate Highway 10 and Baker Road in Sutton County, Texas. At least four parasequences are discernable by a combination of inferred hardgrounds and erosional surfaces. One of the parasequeces preserves a point bar with multiple lateral accretion surfaces marked by mud drapes. Depositional environments possibly represented are shallow subtidal, tidal channels, supratidal and tidal flat from analysis of the lithology and sedimentary structures of the outcrop parasequences. An annotated photo-mosaic delineates the interpreted parase-quences and sedimentary structures of the outcrop. This study expands the known depositional character of the Edwards Group in the west central Edwards Plateau.
