Abstract
Abstract: Joint
Analysis
of Handcock Hill, Alpine Tx
Abstract
Detailed structural
analysis
was undertaken on mode I joints and shear fractures within the 36.6 Ma Crossen Trachyte that underlies Hancock Hill in Brewster County, Texas. Using a square meter as a repeated sample-area size at 100m to 200m- spaced outcrops on the hill, orientations and dimensions were recorded for all joints above 10 cm within the square. Compilation of orientation data in GIS allows multiple scales of
analysis
, because the
fracture
pattern at each sample site is maintained in the GIS even while the pattern over the entire 1219-meter-diameter hill is shown. Preliminary data show that joint orientations at the scale of the hill correlate with the hill’s current topography. Because structural orientations reveal paleo-stress orientations, the correlation of hill-scale joint orientations and hill slope within this flow deposit reveals an element of geomorphic history.
