Fracture Comparisons from Vertical and Horizontal Wells: a View from the FMI

Abstract

Microresistivity images have been utilized for some time to identify the presence and orientation of fractures within a wellbore. These fractures are commonly used to identify the maximum horizontal stress orientation for implications towards well completions. This study compares fractures identified from an FMI in two vertical wells to fractures identified in three offset horizontal wells drilled in the Spraberry, Upper and Middle Wolfcamp; respectively. Natural fractures and hydraulically induced fractures were observed in the three zones in both the vertical and horizontal wells and the regional horizontal stress orientation confirmed. However, a significant shift or possibly a previously unidentified population of natural fracture orientations was observed which may influence future strategies for well placement, spacing and completions. Furthermore, the presence and distribution of these fractures was correlated back to the spectral and natural gamma rays in the hopes to provide a low cost technique to estimate their presence.
