Potential for Improved Previous HitOilNext Hit Recovery (IOR) in the Permian Basin Unconventional Reservoirs

Abstract

Due to the recent development of unconventional Previous HitoilNext Hit reservoirs in the Permian Basin, the daily Previous HitoilNext Hit production from the region has increased from 842,782 barrels per day in January 2007 to 3,406,000 barrels per day in August 2018 (eia, 2018). Due to the Previous HitnatureNext Hit of unconventional reservoirs, primary recovery is low. With current technology, primary recoveries appear to be less than 10% of original Previous HitoilNext Hit in place. Consequently, there is enormous potential for Increased Previous HitOilNext Hit Recovery (IOR) from the unconventional Previous HitoilNext Hit reservoirs in the Permian Basin. This paper gives an overview of the IOR methods that are being evaluated for future use and/or being tested in the Permian Basin. The results of these IOR methods in other basins will be discussed as well as the potential for these methods in the Permian Basin. The following IOR methods will be discussed: CO2 huff and puff; wet Previous HitgasNext Hit huff and puff; dry Previous HitgasNext Hit huff and puff; water flooding; surfactant flooding; CO2 flooding; and High Pressure Air Injection (HPAI).
