Abstract
Algae and Associated Problematica as Environmental Indicators
Abstract
Remains of lime-secreting and sediment-trapping algae occur abundantly in sediments of Permian age in the Permian basin area.
Studies of Lower Permian (Hueco Group) algal assemblages are presented from localities in the Franklin and southeastern Robledo Mountains. Upper Permian (Guadalupian) algal biota are presented from reef and reef-associated environments of the Permian (Capitan) reef complex.
The results of these studies on the environmental distribution of characteristic groups of algae indicate their narrow ecological dependencies. For this reason algae exhibit excellent potentialities as environmental indicators. Their use as boundary markers is generally limited due to the fact that most genera represent conservative, long-ranging forms.
