Abstract
A Deposit of Coal in the Mississippian of the Deep Delaware Basin
Abstract
In 1975 a high-rank deposit of low volatile bituminous to semi-anthracite coal was discovered in Mississippian rocks in the Delaware basin. This discovery was in a 20,982 foot Ellenburger formation test drilled in Winkler County, Texas. The Northern Natural Gas Company No. 1 University “35-20” drilled through a 17-foot thick coal from 16,500’ to 16,517’. The presence of coal indicates a heretofore unrecognized Osagean depositional environment and an associated unconformity. A paralic environment is suggested. This deposit of coal created a number of serious drilling and testing problems.
