Cotton Valley and Smackover Producing Reservoirs; East Texas, North Louisiana, and South Arkansas Areas

Stephen E. Collins

Abstract

Cotton Valley reservoirs are currently providing major new gas reserves within many areas of the Ark-La-Tex region. Smackover exploration has generally decreased from previous years with the exception of certain areas in North Louisiana (Claiborne Parish). The stratigraphic and structural framework of the Cotton Valley and Smackover can be divided into distinct producing trends, each having predictable producing characteristics and geographical limits. The Smackover producing trends are divided into five different areas:

  1. Fault line;

  2. Salt anticlines;

  3. Basement structures;

  4. Stratigraphic trend; and

  5. Complex Graben-Fault System.

The Cotton Valley producing trends are divided into three different areas:

  1. Cotton Valley limestone of East Texas;

  2. Blanket sandstones of North Louisiana; and

  3. Massive fine-grained sandstones of the Sabine Uplift.

Minor Cotton Valley sand production is developing on the west flank of the East Texas basin from low permeability Bossier sandstones. The lithologic characteristics and producing limits of each reservoir are summarized on a schematic stratigraphic cross section and two areal distribution maps.
