Possible New Energy Sources in Trans-Pecos Texas: Geothermal Energy and Uranium
Abstract
The potential for two new energy sources, geothermal energy
and uranium, has been found and is currently being investigated in Trans-Pecos Texas.
Some 43 hot springs and wells have been located in the region; the majority occur in Hudspeth and Presidio Counties. The hottest waters measure 72 degrees C at the surface. Based upon the silica geothermometer, subsurface waters above 130 degrees C exist in 8 separate locations. The hottest waters, 150 to 180 degrees C, are found in northeastern El Paso and western Presidio Counties.
The uranium concentration of groundwater in west Texas is over four times the average for a similar region. Twelve areas have been located where subsurface waters contain more than 20 ppb uranium.
