Abstract
The Big Yellow Sandstone: a Sandy Braided Stream
Abstract
The Big Yellow Sandstone Member of Maxwell and others’ (1967) Canoe Formation is part of a regressive sequence of strata laid down in the Big Bend area after the withdrawal of the Cretaceous sea. This middle Eocene unit consists of medium- to coarse-grained litharenites and feldspathic litharenites cyclically interbedded with conglomerates, siltstones, and mudstones to form several fining upwards sequences. The sedimentary facies present, along with paleocurrent indicators and the units’ cyclic nature, indicate that the Big Yellow Sandstone was deposited by sandy braided streams flowing in an east-southeasterly direction across the study area.
