Stratigraphy and Structure, Gap Tank Area, Southwestern Pecos County, Texas

Garner L. Wilde

Abstract

The Gap Tank area of the eastern Glass Mountains is unique in the facts that (1) the final stage of deformation associated with the Marathon thrusting can here be rather precisely dated, (2) mapping of units of the Late Pennsylvanian and Permian (Wolfcampian) helps identify hitherto unrecognized formational boundaries, and (3) such delineation helps identify areas conducive to oil and gas exploration, such as the recognition of a large channel complex in the area. Two formations, the Stockton Gap and the Brooks Ranch are formally described and mapped and three members of the Stockton Gap are identified.
