Abstract
Seismic
Exploration of Small, Defined Prospects
Abstract
Seismic
exploration of oil and gas prospects continues to dominate the pre-drilling exploration arena, with 3D
seismic
being the predominant tool. Despite the persistent belief that 3D is too expensive to shoot on a small prospect, and that 2D
seismic
is an appropriate approach for these, 3D
seismic
can be shot as economically as many 2D
seismic
programs, with dramatically better results. As in all sectors of the industry, teams of previously disparate disciplines are forming to solve the common problem of finding oil and gas, with the computer workstation becoming an essential element of this team.
The small prospect
seismic
niche left unaddressed by the major
seismic
contractors is being filled by small
seismic
companies willing to shoot to earn equity. Geologists welcome a
seismic
contractor’s assumption of most of the risk and enhancement of a prospect in exchange for a piece of the action. Many more deals will be made possible by such a scenario. The oil and gas industry, today as in the past, remains dynamic, reacting creatively and positively to change.
