Preliminary Investigation of the Diablo Platform-Delaware Basin Margin, Trans-Pecos Texas, Part II: A Seismic Perspective

Richard J. Erdlac, Jr., Douglas B. Swift, James J. Reeves, and Alexander P. Schoellkopf

Abstract

Recent work using seismic reflection profiles (Line DBGS 114) suggests a complicated tectonic history of the Diablo Platform with possible major stratigraphic influence on the western margin of the Delaware Basin. A total of 43 sequence stratigraphic intervals have been identified along the entire seismic profile. Evidence for Permian-Pennsylvanian and older pre-Woodford tectonic activity is suggested from the stratigraphic intervals affected by faulting. Large anticlinal structures, intricate stratigraphic interfingering, and massive clastic wedges are interpreted along the profile. Present hydrocarbon production near the Diablo Platform-Delaware Basin margin may represent only a small amount of a vast quantity of commercial hydrocarbons yet to be discovered.
