Imaging a San Andres Reservoir with Interwell Seismic

James H. Justice, J. Craig Woerpel

Abstract

Interwell seismic imaging is a component part of a DOE Class II project, focused on marginal shallow shelf carbonate reservoirs. Interwell imaging was carried out on fifteen survey lines in the West Welch Field, Dawson County, Texas. Data is being used to develop the reservoir description for planning a pilot CO2 injection project in this field. In the second phase of the project, interwell imaging will be employed to monitor the CO2 injection. Technologies employed include interwell tomography with both shear and compressional waves, as well as interwell reflection profiling. Both sources and receivers operate at reservoir level in this type of imaging. The project is a joint effort between OXY USA and the Department of Energy.
