Utilization of Old Cased-Hole Logs for Characterization of the Naturally Fractured Spraberry Formation, Midland Basin, Texas

Ashish K. Banik, David S. Schechter

Abstract

In this paper, we demonstrate the applicability of old cased-hole gamma-ray and neutron logs in determining net pay as observed in the modern open-hole logs and core data from the Spraberry trend. We also provide a simple methodology to calibrate old cased-hole neutron logs reported in neutron counts or API units or even no units into a meaningful porosity log. This investigation shows that the cut-off criteria for identification of the Spraberry pay zones previously developed from open-hole logs can be applied successfully to old cased-hole logs from Spraberry trend wells throughout the Midland Basin.
