Percentile Log Normalization: Example from Bar-Mar Field, Crane County, Texas
Abstract
Percentile normalization is a means of applying known statistical constraints to an uncalibrated well log to bring it into a corrected state. It is based on the assumption that in a geographic area and stratigraphic interval of known lithology and well-log response, representative statistics of the high and low extremes of a formation property can be used to calibrate the log. The method can bring a group of logs to a common standard, making the members individually consistent with each other and removing most of the systematic calibration errors that may be present. This paper presents an example of the use of acoustic and density logs to calibrate the conversion of old neutron count rate logs to porosity in a West Texas dolostone reservoir at Bar-Mar field, Crane County. Bar-Mar Field lies at the southern end of the Central Basin Platform and is part of the Leonardian Restricted Platform Carbonate play.
