Approaches to Defining Reservoir Physical Properties from 3-D Seismic Attributes with Limited Well Control: an Example from the Jurassic Smackover Formation, Alabama

Abstract

In many development areas, where abundant well control exists, statistical and other means have been, or are being, developed to help to correlate log-based properties with attributes derived from 3-D seismic volumes. These correlations are used to make predictions about reservoir properties away from existing well bores, and thus to guide infill or step-out drilling. However, in areas of little well control, the statistical basis for these methods becomes less firmly grounded. This might be the case in a new or small field. In this paper, we demonstrate the use of seismic modeling as an aid to seismic attribute studies which is particularly appropriate in cases of limited well control. The study focuses on the Upper Smackover Formation in southern Alabama.

Seismic modeling helps to verify the physical basis of the seismic attributes that are derived from the well-log/seismic correlations in the study area. Furthermore, the model results show which seismically-derived attributes, of the growing plethora of that can now be calculated, might be most helpful in determining reservoir parameters from seismic data.
