Basement Tectonic Controls on Structural Style of the Laramide Thrust Belt Interpreted from Gravity and Magnetic Data

Richard I. Gibson

Abstract

The configuration of the basement along a break in the craton of western North America controls the structural style of the Laramide fold and thrust belt, as well as details of the geometry of the thurst faults. Gravity and magnetic data have been used to interpret subtle basement features which affect thrusting. The resulting structural styles are compared for the thrust belt from northern Montana to southern Nevada.
