Oil and Gas Production and Reserves, Mesaverde Group, Green River Basin, Wyoming

William P. Iverson

Abstract

Oil and gas production from the Mesaverde Group of the Greater Green River Basin is over 9 Tcf gas and 400 MMbbl liquids. This production marks the Mesaverde as a significant gas producer in Wyoming, deriving 11% of the State's production from only 5% of its wells. Production decline curves are calculated for all 522 producing entities, and a reserve of 577 Bcf gas is projected. Current drilling activity will undoubtedly increase the gas reserve.

The upper Almond sand of the Mesaverde Group has been the classic exploration and completion target, yet production from some wells approaches (or exceeds) the gas in place for the Almond alone. Gas recovery from these wells indicates that laminated tight gas sands are being connected by fracturing treatments. Additional resources from tight gas sands can be tapped by fractures that connect numerous sands.
