Steamboat Butte Oil Field—A Model for Future Exploration

Susan Raye Wager

Abstract

The Steamboat Butte oil field is a mature oil field located in the western part of the Wind River Basin of Wyoming. Several horizons proved productive; the most important are the Tensleep, Phosphoria and Nugget formations. Ultimately, the field is expected to yield over 85 million barrels of oil. The complex tectonic forces which produced the structural trap found here may have created similar undiscovered features elsewhere in the basin. Today's advanced seismic processing capabilities could be used to locate these hidden anticlines.
