A History of Changing Concepts in Petroleum Exploration and Development, Cretaceous Dakota Group, Rocky Mountain Basins

Robert J. Weimer

Abstract

This summary presents the evolution of exploration and development concepts in stratigraphy and petroleum geology over the past 55 years brought about by studies of the Dakota Group. The Dakota is one of the most widely used stratigraphic names in the Western Interior of the United States, and is economically important as a widespread reservoir for petroleum and water.

New concepts developed progressively over time about petroleum exploration for the Dakota Group are now integrated into the subjects of sequence stratigraphy and the petroleum system, subjects applied around the globe. From application of these systems, new ideas for plays have been created to sustain production by discovery of new fields.

The continuous advancement of knowledge and technology, through research and solving problems encountered in daily operations, will chart future changes and success, much as has happened during the past.
