Coal Bed Methane Development - Structure is Still Important

Richard W. Davis

Abstract

Data developed during a study of Powder River Basin CBM producing fields using conventional geologic analysis in combination with analysis of hydrogeologic parameter variations shows structure in the form of linears, probably due to faulting, to be an important factor in CBM production. Cross- fault permeabilities reduced from areal permeabilities by a factor of three or more are almost certainly impacting CBM production. Analysis also indicates that some areas, defined by regional fracture trends, are producing far more CBM than adjacent areas. A significantly enhanced permeability in the high production areas is probably the reason.
