Geothermal Parameters in the Powder River Basin, Wyoming

Richard W. Davis

Abstract

This paper describes a project to improve the value and comprehensiveness of geothermal data obtained from wireline logs run on Powder River Basin oil and gas wells in Wyoming. The basic data used were bottom hole temperatures, depth of measurement, and the length of time between cessation of circulation and temperature measurement. At least one data set was collected in each township where wells have been drilled, resulting in 783 original data points. From these data formulas were derived for true formation temperatures and thermal gradient values at each of the original well sites. Contour maps and graphs are presented of thermal parameters across the basin.
