Abstract
The Prediction of Old Faithful’s Next Eruption
Abstract
A mathematical model of an eruption cycle for Old Faithful geyser is developed. The model is based on the assumption that the flow rate of water into Old Faithful’s reservoir is constant. The measurement of the eruption height as a function of time allows the volumetric flow rate of water discharged during an eruption to be calculated. This data can be used in the derived model to predict the quiet interval between eruptions with greater accuracy than by the method now used by the Rangers at Yellowstone National Park.
