Abstract
Stratigraphic Review of Oligocene Beds in Northern Great Plains
Abstract
Beds of the White River Group were described by Darton in 1899b as consisting of the Chadron and Brule Formations in Nebraska and South Dakota. Although first named for sections in Nebraska, type sections were not clearly defined and controversy has ensued.
The stratigraphy of the White River Group in western South Dakota and Nebraska, northeast Colorado and eastern Wyoming is reviewed here. Type sections are named and the beds are described. The contact between beds of the Orella and Whitney members is redefined as the base of the White Bed or just below it. Further, we propose that the Orella and Whitney members be renamed the Orella and Whitney Formations.
