Abstract
Conodont Biostratigraphy of Part of the Devonian of the Alberta Rocky Mountains
ABSTRACT
Reconnaissance of the Devonian Flume, Perdrix, Mt. Hawk, Alexo and Palliser Formations in the Alberta Rocky Mountains was undertaken for comparison with biostratigraphic data in the Utah-Nevada area. Samples from several of these formations have yielded significant conodont faunas which allow precise correlation and zonation for part of the Alberta Devonian section.
The middle and upper part of the Flume Formation at Cold Sulphur Springs, north of Jasper, is distinguished by two upper Middle Devonian zones. The uppermost beds of the Flume, containing the Spirifer jasperensis fauna, have an abundant and well preserved Polygnathus asymmetrica fauna, indicative of the lowest Upper Devonian in Germany. Four distinct conodont assemblages are present in the overlying Perdrix and Mt. Hawk Formations which allow correlation with the detailed Upper Devonian zonation now recognized in Europe and western United States.
The Palliser Formation at Mt. Rundle has yielded meager faunas whose preservation does not allow precise correlation.
