Abstract
Tertiary Foraminifera in Gulf Coast Petroleum Exploration and Development
Abstract
The history of foraminiferal studies in the Gulf Coast Tertiary is presented, and the methods used in correlation, zonation and the determination of paleoecology which are very important in petroleum exploration and development are described. Significant species and assemblages of Foraminifera are listed and pertinent references are given for each principal marine unit. The general depositional conditions are described and the main structural features are pointed out. A correlation chart is presented to show the many subdivisions of the Cenozoic in the Gulf Coast and their correlation from one part of the province to another. The four major areas of Tertiary-Quaternary oil and gas production, and the updip limits of some guide species of Foraminifera are shown on small scale maps.
