The changes in properties of oil and gas phases are described for petroleum reservoir fluids found at increasing depths. With increasing pressure, more natural gas dissolves in the oil phase and more normally liquid hydrocarbons dissolve in the gas phase. The properties of these fluids at high pressure and the changes which accompany pressure reduction are described with reference to their significance in oil and gas production. The phase relations are explored for recovering crude oil from high-pressure gas-drive fields by converting the oil to a single phase miscible with natural gas, followed by cycling.
