Title: Geochemical Study of a Reef Complex

Author(s): Charles E. Weaver (2)

Abstract:

The strontium, barium, and calcite contents of the interreef Late Devonian Ireton shale beds and the underlying Duvernay Formation of Alberta reflect the presence of the adjacent reefs. The distribution of these materials is controlled largely by reefs. Strontium content is the best reef indicator, being generally greater in the vicinity (5 mi) of the reefs. The Sr is related to the calcite content and is believed to reflect the presence of fine, reef-derived material in the middle Ireton shale beds.
