Title: Patterson Sandstone, Ordovician or Silurian?: GEOLOGIC NOTES

Author(s): Frederic F. Mellen (2)

Abstract:

The Patterson sandstone of the subsurface of north Mississippi was considered earlier to be of Late Ordovician (Richmond) age. Continuing study of this unit suggests a strong possibility that it is a basal transgressive sandstone of Silurian age. Its known distribution is shown in its regional setting. Paleontologic information is lacking. The implications of a Silurian transgression in the formation of oil and gas reservoirs are outlined.
