Abstract:
The year 1978 marked the first year of exploratory drilling on the U.S. Atlantic OCS. Seven exploratory wells were completed in the Baltimore Canyon Trough (offshore New Jersey) for a total of 106,094 ft (32,337 m) of drilling. Of these wells, 1 tested gas, another reported minor gas shows, and the remaining 5 were plugged, having no reported shows. Six wells were being drilled or tested at year end, including the COST B-3 well. OCS Lease Sale 43, in the Southeast Georgia Embayment, resulted in an award of 43 tracts for a total of $101,743,443 in bids. Geophysical activity totaled 13,331 line-mi (21,450 km) in 48.86 crew-weeks.
