(B) Energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS) spectrum from the entire area of image (A) showing major elements of K, Al, Mg, and Fe, partially reflecting the chemical composition of illite ((K, H3O)(Al, Mg, Fe)2(Si, Al)4O10[(OH)2,(H2O)]). The elemental composition from EDS analysis did not confirm ill-smect. The presence of ill-smect was confirmed by x-ray diffraction analysis and was substantiated by the morphology and EDS spectrum. The bright line distortions at the bottom right of image (A) resulted from sample charging. det = detector; HV = high voltage; vCD = low voltage–high contrast detector; WD = working distance.
