The geology of the area is different from that of the East Shetland Basin, largely because it is located above upper Permian (Zechstein Group) evaporites of the Northern Permian Basin. Their occurrence not only controlled the formation of pods of shale ascribed to the Smith Bank Formation but also caused significant deformation of the Triassic (Skagerrak Formation) and localized deposition of younger reservoirs (e.g., Upper Jurassic, Fulmar Formation) that characterize the area.
