ABSTRACT

The Nisku formation of the Winterburn group of Upper Devonian age is mapped throughout a portion of the Alberta Rocky Mountains. The area studied extends from the Moose Mountain area in the south to the Smoky River area in the north. Based on lithological similarities to well established lithofacies types of the Plains area, the formation is mapped into approximate areas of five predominant informal rock types as follows: dolomite, porous in part; dolomite, silty and argillaceous; limestone and dolomite, interbedded; limestone; shale and limestone, interbedded. considered to be the same approximate age, but an exception is noted in that the upper part of the Nisku shale and limestone facies, which has previously been included with the Alexo, may be of post-Nisku age in the southeast part of Jasper National Park.

The Nisku lithofacies map is based on 53 measured outcrop sections and 18 well sections. A summary of selected outcrop sections is tabulated.
