Palynology of the Kootenay Formation at its Type Section

Stanley A. J. Pocock

ABSTRACT

Palynological examination of selected samples from the type section of the Kootenay formation at Grassy Mountain in the Crowsnest Pass area of southwestern Alberta indicates that the entire section is Upper Jurassic (Portlandian or younger) in age. Palynological assemblages from the lower part of the Mutz member, towards the top of the Kootenay compare closely with those described by Rouse from the Kootenay strata of the Fernie Basin. In localities away from the type section, Lower Cretaceous beds may occur in addition to Jurassic strata within the Kootenay formation.
