Petrofabric analyses of the potash ore, and adjacent halite, in the Prairie Evaporite Formation near Esterhazy, Saskatchewan, reveal that the halite and

sylvite grains tend to be oriented so that one (100) cleavage is parallel to the bedding and another is parallel to the southwest regional dip. Low bromine contents indicate that both halite and sylvite grains are of secondary origin, thus it is suggested that the preferred orientation is largely the result of postdepositional processes.
The stability of mine walls may be significantly affected by the physical 
anisotropy
of the rock resulting from the preferred orientation of the cleavages.
