Abstract
Modern Rivers: Geomorphology and Sedimentation
L. Van Bendegom: A Neglected Innovator in Meander Studies
Abstract
An analytical solution to the problem of the three-dimensional geometry of a river meander of specified plan shape, discharge, and calibre of sediment load was obtained more than 30 years ago by L. Van Bendegom, a Dutch hydraulic engineer. His work has since been almost totally overlooked. The measure of his achievement, however, is established by means of a review of the now substantial and rapidly growing literature concerned with this question, originating partly in engineering and partly in sedimentological circles. It is only in the past few years that the position reached by Van Bendegom has been regained.
