Abstract
Calcite-Aragonite Differentiation by Selective Staining and Scanning Electron Microscopy
Nahum Schneidermann (1), Philip A. Sandberg (1)
ABSTRACT
The minerals aragonite and calcite comprise the two major components of carbonate skeletons and sediments. Their identification under the scanning electron microscope is based solely on morphological characteristics. The combined use of SEM with diluted, heated Feigl's stain provides a rapid, unequivocal means of differentiating calcite and aragonite. Aragonite is stained by a fine-grained precipitate, which does not obscure the details of the underlying ultrastructure. This method is useful in studies of lithified and unlithified sediments and of ultrastructure in bimineralic skeletons.
