Practical Model for the Smackover Formation

Robert B. Lieber (1)

ABSTRACT

The Smackover Formation has been an important exploration target for many years with production coming from a variety of structural, stratigraphic, diagenetic, and combination traps. The Smackover is also one of the most studied formations of the Gulf Coast. The resulting exploration models have either been rigid in their application, or have been based on core and thin section analysis not readily available to the prospect generating geologist. A new model is proposed which looks at the Smackover as a lithology rather than a time unit. The model uses primarily subsurface logs, and can be applied either to wildcat or exploitation drilling. The Smackover is a mature exploration target, but with enhanced understanding it is still an economically attractive objective.
