Definition, Identification, and Measurement of Normal and Abnormal Subsurface Pressures

Donald J. Timko, Lloyd C. Fons, William K. Grittman, Forest B. Rees

Abstract

A number of methods are used in the industry to detect, measure, and evaluate formation pressures. The ability to recognize the presence of abnormal pressures is vital to many segments of the industry. To the explorationist, abnormal pressures can be correlated to the type of hydrocarbon production and therefore to well economics. To the engineer, knowledge of the pressure environment is vital in order to conduct safe and efficient drilling operations.
