Case History of the Bekapai Field

M. De Matharel, G. Klein, T. Oki

Abstract

The Bekapai Field discovered in April 1972 is located approximately 15 km off the Mahakam Delta of East Kalimantan in the central portion of the Mahakam Contract Area jointly held by TOTAL INDONESIE and JAPEX INDONESIA LTD under a Production Sharing Contract with PERTAMINA.

The structure is a large faulted anticline delineated by seismic. The areal and vertical closures of the structure are 210 sq km and 400 m respectively. So far commercial oil is restricted to the western fault block over an area of only 8 sq km.

A recent high resolution seismic survey confirms the presence of a N-S fault pattern previously known from conventional seismic but in less detail.

The hydrocarbon bearing reservoirs encountered between 1300 and 1600 m are usually distributary front or channel deposits which form part of a large eastwards prograding deltaic system.

Production started in July 1974 from a single well as a pilot project. Since 1975 the field is producing from a platform at a rate of nearly 50.000 BOPD.

Delineation and development wells are presently being drilled for better evaluation of the structure and drainage of the field.
