Diversified Uses of a Colloidal Material in Drilling and Completion Operations

William K. Ott, Warren Miller, Lilik Sabariman, Mulyadi

Abstract

Recent advances in the use of a colloidal material have proven them to be particularly effective in combatting common drilling and completion problems. When combined with divalent metal ions, a simple chemical reaction occurs which allows this colloidal material to perform useful functions. Its use has been successful in (1) helping control sub-surface water flows in both producing oil wells and injection wells, (2) combatting lost circulation during drilling operations, (3) improving mud displacement efficiency and (4) preventing cement fall back or loss of returns during primary and squeeze cementing. This paper will present the development of colloidal material applications and field results from throughout the Far East where these processes have been successfully applied.
