New Seismic Method in Populated Areas (A Case Study in the Surabaya Area, East Java, Indonesia)

Suyitno Patmosukismo, A. Syahbuddin, G. Alameda

Abstract

Conventional seismic exploration using explosive source can be sometimes problematic, because of area with high density of population. In such a case, surface source is more convenient. When the objective is very shallow, light dampers can be used. The penetration is good enough until one kilometer depth (in certain area could be expected to two kilometers) and the resolution is as good or better as the conventional one.

In Surabaya area a survey has been successfully completed using this methods.

The minisosie surface source compares favourably with previous conventional surveys. Correlation with the geology is fully satisfying.

The Surabaya area is located in the eastern portion of both the Kendeng and Randublatung Zones of the North East Java Basin. The basin is situated north of the Java volcanic cones, is eastwest oriented, and gradually shallows northward onto the ancient Sundaland. Westward it adjoins the West Jave Basin, whilst the eastward limit is beyond the Madura Island and the Straits fo Madura.

A minimum of 5 oil fields were developed in the Surabaya area, but since about 1942 some have been abandoned.

The purpose of the survey is to map the abandoned fields which are now densely populated.

An understanding of the subsurface conditions of the area is important for evaluating whether oil still exists, or whether further development (vertically and horizontally) is feasible.
