Sugembong C. F., W. L. Brady, Azwir Geneng, M. R. Byrne, T. Barr

Abstract

Caltex Pacific Indonesia (CPI) recently drilled the first two horizontal wells in Petani field of Bekasap District, Central Sumatra. The two wells were completed in the Menggala formation at TVD of 3920 ft. The development wells are one of CPI's strategy to improve oil recovery and increase daily oil production.

This paper describes the two case histories of the horizontal wells including well design, drilling mechanism, drilling fluid design, completion strategies, and production performance. A Mixed Metal Hydroxide (MMH) mud system (first time in Indonesia) was used during the drilling of the wells. The completions of the these wells are different. Petani #46 was completed open hole and Petani #45 was completed with a 6-5/8" perforated liner.
