Conoco Belida Field - Directional Drilling Case Study

J. R. Fairbaim

Abstract

A substantial improvement in drilling efficiency was realized using a combination of jetting and steerable drilling to kick off and drill the wells on Conoco Indonesia Inc.'s Belida 'A' Platform in the South Natuna Sea. Significant time and cost savings were achieved against initial AFE estimates with the overall drill and complete cost per foot being reduced from USD 377 / ft to USD 292 / ft over the life of the project. Effective bottom hole assembly design allowed 12-1/4" hole sections to be drilled with one bottom hole assembly in a single bit run, with a record of 4,881 ft of 12-1/4" hole being drilled in one 24 hour period.
